Research project background
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis suffer from chronic inflammation, swelling, and stiffness of the joints. These symptoms are accompanied by severe, unrelenting pain that devastates the patients' livelihood. At the forefront of pain research, scientists are investigating the therapeutic potential of blocking nerve growth factor (NGF), a key molecule that heightens pain sensitivity and drives inflammation.
Visualization goals
In order to boost interest and knowledge base in this exciting field, my project will provide a novel three-dimensional (3D) visualization depicting the complex cellular and molecular events underlying pain sensitization. Through the creation of a five-minute, 3D animated film targeting pharmacology students, medical students, and pain researchers, I hope to (1) educate viewers on the role of NGF in rheumatoid arthritic pain and (2) stimulate their interest in this area of study.

Feb-Apr 2011 | 3D animatic

The 3D animatic represents the translation of my 2D animatic into 3D space. The main purposes of the 3D animatic are to set up the scenes and to check camera movement, pacing, and composition. A number of animation challenges are still unresolved and the models have not been textured at this point - challenges I will be tackling the next couple of months. Dec 2010-Feb 2011 | 2D animatic

The 2D animatic is a pre-production working document that provides a draft version of the shots and sequences and scratch narration of the final 3D animation that comprises my MRP. The primary goals of this assignment were to check the pacing and sequencing of events, simulate camera movement, and acquire basic animation and editing skills in After Effects. This 2D animatic was also used to fine-tune the storytelling and identify areas that require greater clarification of the science. (Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe After Effects CS5)

Nov-Dec 2010 | Storyboard

A storyboard was used to continue hashing out the story and visuals. Care was taken to manage the region of attention so that the viewer's attention would glide smoothly from one area of focus to the next. I sought to minimize camera movement and maximize cohesiveness in order to facilitate understanding of this complex subject matter. (Adobe Photoshop CS4)
